Hand Painted Images history

During the 19th century hand painted images became very desirable as colour photography had not yet been invented. This was done to make the image more realistic as well as for artistic purposes. This was something usually carried out by the artist or photographer themselves. However some companies did specialise in offering this as a service. The colour was added straight on top of the surface of the image. Paint, oil, pastels and dyes were often used for the colour. As soon as colour film was invented hand painted images were no longer required and lots of colourists found themselves out of work.
